Henry McKenna Bottled in Bond Bourbon Aged 10 Years
Today we will dig into another bottle that I’ve had for a bit, a Henry McKenna Bottled in Bond 10 Year Old Single Barrel, Barrel No 10015 which was barreled on Dec. 28, 2010. I must have purchased this in early 2021, but I will rate it at today's price point, which has appreciated quite a bit from less than 1.5 years ago.
ABV: 50%
How it smells….vanilla, baking spices, some oak, but not too much, apples, all together, a very well rounded nose.
How it tastes….starts off with a bit of Dr. Pepper followed by creamy vanilla and oak. The end has some peppery notes but the spice is mostly cinnamon with a sweet caramel finish.
Price..$65
Rating….🥃🥃🥃
Final thoughts….Taste wise, this is a great sip and I would definitely up it to 4x 🥃 based on what I bought it for ($50) but today’s price has gone up 30% since then to $65! It has a nice combination of rich creamy sweetness and spice, both of the peppery and baking variety. From start to finish, it’s a very delicious and delightful sip. Mrs. Nice Sipper gave it high marks as well. So for me, at $65, this is a 3x 🥃, which means it’s worth the purchase but I’m not going to be stocking up on it at that price.
I did a side by side taste (non-blind) with a bottle of Eagle Rare 10 that I had opened since it’s a comparable age and roughly similar proofs (90 vs 100). As much as I hate to admit it, I think it’s a little bit tastier than the Eagle Rare 10, which has been my go-to for a long time. Eagle Rare 10 has also gone up in price lately, but you can still get it regularly for <$40, which makes the Henry McKenna >60% more expensive than the Eagle Rare and Henry McKenna is not >60% better than Eagle Rare so from a value perspective, Eagle Rare is still superior.
That said, this is still damn good bourbon.
